battelstar galactica...
so my new theory. this is probably partially due to my recent re-reading of "the last battle" by c.s. lewis... i finally got to watch eps. 3-5 of this season, so if you've not seen those yet, spoilers in the next paragraph. but if you watch it at all, you probably have seen them already.
as soon as president roslin said "i'm playing the religious card," i realised she is the antichrist. toward the end of that same episode with the blessing the kneely people, my suspicions seemed confirmed. serious bummer, since i liked and respected her and thought the martial law thing was atrocious (as we were undoubtedly supposed to think), but i guess the antichrist is always likable and respectable.
such a great show.
i'm getting over a cold, which is the only reason i had any time to catch up on BSG last night.
in other news, my computer files were recovered and i even managed to defrag the hard drive without it crashing last night, but that didn't help the horrendously slow performance. checkdisk remains totally clean. probably i will reformat the hard drive now that i know all the data is backed up to various dvds.
among the recovered files were all the photos (quite a few, mostly taken by natasha) from the camp in belarus. i will post a link to them soon.

ALANNA – Been thinking about your recent computer mishaps… Kinda reminded me of the on-going saga that RWC, Sr. had over the years as he attempted to save “important” writings, recordings, etc…
Of course, all of his early info was committed to paper by pen or typewriter – most of this was lost over the years in various ways – moving, mold, mildew, roaches, termites, etc.
He was always fascinated with recording devices and spent much money and time making “lasting” records to pass down to succeeding generations… First it was 78 rpm records – family and friends spent hours in a “recording studio” made up by lining a small hot closest with blankets and quilts as he cut records of sermonizing, singing, reciting, and just idle chatter. Over time most of these records were rendered useless because of warping, scratches or breakage – and later, no available equipment for playback.
RWC, Sr. foresaw that records would no doubt become obsolete so he began transferring the records onto a newer recording system - the wire recorder – while also making new recordings. Unfortunately, these, too, were soon passe as the wire too easily tangled and bent – making playback impossible. And the few remaining wire recordings could not be played, as equipment became unavailable.
Then it was on to reel-to-reel take recorders. These became somewhat tricky to record with, or to play back, while in Jamaica as the island was wired for 40 cycle rather than the American standard 60 cycle for which the equipment was designed. That obstacle did not deter our patriarch – he lined up car batteries, a converter and the reel-to-reel and IF everything worked together could record or listen a while before the batteries died. When he returned to the USA he began recording in earnest… But the heat and humidity of Florida fused many tapes and attempts to “de-fuse” them often would result in a tangled mess. But enough were salvaged to begin the process of transferring everything onto cassette tapes… It had become increasingly difficult to keep the reel-to-reels in working order – and ere long they, too, were no longer available.
RWC, Sr., recorded and acquired hundreds of cassettes for his children and grandchildren. However, when it came time to “pass them down” there was very little enthusiasm or interest in becoming a recipient of the recordings. Several took some to re-record onto CD’s, but soon gave up on the project… Good thing, because now it’s DVDs and probably in the not-too-distance future they, too, will be outdated…
He passed away before he was able to master the computer – though he tried. In the end, those that benefited from RWC, Sr.’s wisdom and wit did so mainly via his personality and his inter-acting with people – not his writings or many recordings…
So, in your quest to record and save data remember RWC, Sr., and spend most of your time, effort and money on and with people.:-) LOVE you much, G/ma Price
